I went through the same thought process, looking for something to mow 4 acres<br>.<br>Things that I learned.<br>Gear drive transmissions hold up much better in the long run<br>(as opposed to belt drives) but more $$$<br>Hydrostatic transmissions make the job more pleasant, as does power steering<br>Diesels hold up better, are cheaper to run, much less maintenence.<br>This all adds up to a

In addition, 4wd makes the tractor much more usable for other tasks.
(ie snow removal, landscaping) as does a real 3 point hitch
Now you are talking $10k+ (ie a compact diesel tractor)

However, the resale value of these tractors (as opposed to mowers) is phenomenal
Generally they sell for nearly what you paid for them.
(A 5 year old overused mower isn't worth very much.)
Also, they will last nearly forever.
.
So (I thought) take your pick, $3k every 5 or so years or $10k once.
I was looking at a Kubota B7300 or JD455 ($10k +/-)
BUT, somehow I managed to buy 24 acres instead of 4 acres
so I ended up with $16k for a Kubota B1700 w/ loader, mower, brush hog
(Which I realize is way more that you need)

The point is you will find a lot of posts on this board
about people have gone with a $3k machine for a few acres
and have ended up buying something more substantial, later.
I think you will find the general consensus is pay now or pay later
(my wife still can't believe what I spent)

Thanks for the replies.<br>It's not that it's difficult to raise the front end,<br>I'm just surprised the manuel doesn't say to, if it is the only way<br>(In fact it specifically says to remove the loader first. ????)

Seems Friday was the day to deliver Kubotas<br>I got my B1700, same question.<br>Same response from the dealer, <br>no break-in required but take it easy at first.<br>I took it to mean nothing that bogs down the engine, <br>ie trying to mow too fast through tall grass<br>Its been pouring rain since, haven't been able to use it :-{<br>Pete

I saw a folding canopy on a Kubota B7300<br>(Much like a baby carriage top)<br>Whether it would fold and then allow the ROPS to fold I can't say.<br>Let me know if you want more info<br>Pete

A New Holland/Kubota dealer (sells both) told me that he felt<br>Kubota was more reliable than New Holland, especially the newer models.<br>.<br>He stated that each new NH model has had several months of recalls and <br>problems, until they get the bugs worked out.<br>.<br>Accurate statement? Who knows, but he did have a TC-18 in stock,<br>did not have a B1700 (competitive models) yet he steered me to the Kubota.<br>I'm now waiting on the B1700<br>.<br>Pete

I received a quote of $15,250.00 for<br>Kubota B1700 with HST, 4WD, 60

$1400 more for a similar B2100
I like the B1700 quote, the other seems high.
Any opinions?

Oh, I don't intend to mess with it.<br>I was more wondering about if I bought a new one if this was normal.<br>The New Holland dealer says their separate PS pump is better.<br>.<br>He may not even be aware of the problem and I didn't bring it up.<br>He says his wife uses it, but doesn't like it.<br>Funny thing is, the tractor is under warrenty so it should be fixed<br>unless it was damaged by abuse/misuse.<br>Not something I want to mess with.
